After the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotlandwere co-dominated in a confederation under James I, the Cross of St George was merged with the Cross of St Andrew (representing Scotland) to become the original metric flag (or Union Jack, Union Jack). The flag later became the flag representing the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, it was merged with the St Patrick's Flag, representing Ireland, to become the current British flag, which has a size ratio of 2:1.
